Signatures turned in for Nevada amendment to limit eminent domain: KESQ-TV3 (Palm Desert CA), 6/20/06

Supporters of a [Nevada] state constitutional amendment to limit the taking of private land through eminent domain say they turned in a petition with 136 thousand signatures.

That would be far more than the 83 thousand signatures needed to place the initiative on the November ballot.

The measure would prevent the government from taking land for private development while still allowing the taking of land for public uses such as schools and roads.

In addition, land owners would be given "the highest price the property would bring on the open market."

In order to change the state constitution voters must approve the amendment this November and again in November 2008.
